Building and Remodeling in Barrington
Barrington is home ground. This is the full list of what we do here, and the four finished houses you can look at before you call.
Most Barrington houses are worth keeping. The question is which parts
The village core is full of houses built between 1920 and 1970 that were framed properly, sited well and then worked on by six different people over fifty years. The bones are usually fine. What is not fine is the 1988 kitchen addition that was never insulated, the bathroom that has been leaking into the joists since before you owned it, and the electrical service that was adequate when a house ran a television and a furnace.
So the honest answer on an older Barrington house is almost never "gut it" and almost never "just do the kitchen." It is a list, in order, with prices against it, and a frank note about which items can wait a year and which one will cost you triple if it waits. You get that list after we have been in the house, not over the phone.
Ask for the bad news first
Any builder can tell you what a new kitchen costs. Ask instead what they found in the crawl space, what they think is behind the tile, and what they would do first if it were their money. That answer is the one worth comparing between builders.

What we take on in Barrington
Ground-up houses, whole-house remodels, and single rooms. The same crew and the same builder across all of it, which is the only reason the small jobs get run properly.
- Custom homes on village lots and on the acre-plus parcels toward Cuba Road.
- Whole-house remodels and additions on the pre-1970 housing stock in and around the village core.
- Kitchens, bathrooms, lower levels and covered porches as standalone jobs, not as filler between big ones.

Do you take on single-room jobs in Barrington, or only whole houses?
Single rooms, yes. A bathroom or a kitchen on its own is a normal job for us here, partly because Barrington is close enough that running a small site properly is not a logistics problem. What we will not do is take a small job and then staff it with whoever is free that week.
My house is in the historic part of the village. Does that change things?
It changes the exterior conversation. Work visible from the street gets more scrutiny, and that affects windows, roofing, siding and additions. It rarely affects what you do inside. We will tell you at the walkthrough which parts of your wish list are going to involve a review and which are not.
Can you work around us while we live in the house?
For a single room, almost always. For a whole-house remodel in an older Barrington house, we will usually tell you to move out for the loud months, because the dust and the heat and water interruptions make it miserable and because the job runs faster and cheaper with the house empty.
