Custom Home Builders in Wheaton

Wheaton's older neighbourhoods hold some of the best streets in DuPage County, and a new house on one of them has a high bar to clear.

Building on a street that already works

The streets around central Wheaton have a consistency that took a century to develop: setbacks that line up, porches at similar depths, mature parkway trees and houses that sit comfortably with their neighbours. A replacement house that ignores that pattern is conspicuous for the wrong reasons, and the city hears about it.

Designing to the street is not a constraint on quality, it is what makes the house look like it deserves to be there. Setback, roof scale, porch depth and the placement of the garage do most of that work. Those are early decisions, they cost nothing extra, and they are nearly impossible to fix later.

Look at the block

Before design starts, walk the street with us and notice the setback line and roof heights. Half of what makes a new house fit is decided in that hour.

Custom Home Building

New construction that will still look right in thirty years

Wheaton's good housing stock has lasted because it was built with a sense of proportion rather than to a trend. The same applies now. Window proportion, the relationship between the eave and the window head, the depth of a porch, how the roof planes meet. Get those right and the house ages well regardless of what finishes are fashionable when it is built.

  • Setback line, roof scale and porch depth read from the street first
  • Stormwater and grading engineered for the added impervious area
  • Parkway and mature trees protected through construction properly

Questions

Asked in Wheaton

Something not answered here? Call (847) 380-8212 and ask us directly.

Does Wheaton have design review for new homes?

Review focuses on zoning, bulk and code for most single-family work, with additional scrutiny where historic designation applies. Variances get a hearing and neighbours attend. Designing within the envelope avoids all of that.

Can I build a larger house than my neighbours?

Within the zoning envelope, yes, and the envelope on an older Wheaton lot is tighter than people expect. We run the numbers first so the design starts from the real limit rather than finding it at the permit counter.

What about the parkway trees?

They belong to the city and they are protected. Construction access, utility trenching and driveway work all have to respect them. It is a logistics problem worth solving on paper before the first truck arrives.
